01Transport & Metro

Getting around Bengaluru

Namma Metro, the city's metro, is finally growing fast.

The Purple Line reached Whitefield in October 2023. The Yellow Line reached Electronic City in August 2025, with trains built to run without a driver. Work on the Airport Line and the Pink Line has been sped up. Until the network is finished, most expat families travel by road. A car with a driver is the usual answer for commutes on the ORR (the Outer Ring Road) and the tech corridors.

What it costs

Uber / Ola / Rapido
Uber and Ola both work well; Rapido Bike for solo hops in peak traffic. Surge pricing during rain, IPL match days, and Diwali week.
Namma Yatri
Bengaluru-born open-source auto-rickshaw app. Zero-commission, used heavily by Bengaluru autos. Often the cheapest auto fare in town; pairs well with metered rides.
BMTC Bus / Vajra

Yulu (E-Bike)

At peak hours (8 to 11am, 5 to 9pm) the Purple Line (Whitefield), Green Line and Yellow Line (Electronic City) bypass the ORR and Silk Board jams. For school runs, embassy events and tech-corridor commutes, take the metro wherever your route runs along an existing line.

02Apps & Digital Life

Apps to install

Bengaluru runs on phone apps, perhaps more than any other Indian city, because so many people here work in tech. Most of the apps below were built here, including Swiggy, BigBasket, Practo, Ola, Razorpay and PhonePe. The city also has its own open-source auto-rickshaw app, Namma Yatri, which is cheaper than Ola and Uber.
